Manual Lymphatic Drainage for Lipedema

Gentle support for comfort and fluid management.

Lipedema is a chronic connective-tissue and adipose-tissue disorder that most commonly affects the legs, hips, buttocks, and arms. Symptoms may include disproportionate fat distribution, tenderness, heaviness, easy bruising, swelling, and sensitivity to pressure.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage does not remove lipedema tissue or cure the condition. However, some clients find that gentle lymphatic care helps ease feelings of heaviness, tightness, puffiness, and discomfort—particularly when fluid accumulation is also present.

Sessions at Healwell Lymphatics & Massage focus on gentle, Vodder-based MLD and individualized self-MLD education. Treatment is adapted to your symptoms, tissue sensitivity, health history, and comfort.

I do not diagnose lipedema, provide Complete Decongestive Therapy, or prescribe or fit medical compression garments. Clients needing those services should work with a physician or Certified Lymphedema Therapist.

If you are preparing for or recovering from lipedema reduction surgery, your treatment will be provided through our specialized post-surgical care service.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage for Lipedema in Portland, Oregon

Gentle, individualized support for comfort and fluid-related symptoms.

Lipedema is a chronic connective-tissue and adipose-tissue disorder that most commonly affects the legs, hips, buttocks, and arms. It may cause disproportionate fat distribution, tenderness, heaviness, easy bruising, swelling, and sensitivity to pressure.

At Healwell Lymphatics & Massage, sessions focus on gentle, Vodder-based Manual Lymphatic Drainage adapted to your symptoms, tissue sensitivity, health history, and comfort.

MLD does not remove lipedema tissue or cure the condition. However, some clients find that it helps ease feelings of heaviness, tightness, puffiness, and discomfort—particularly when fluid accumulation is also present.

This service is intended for conservative, non-surgical lipedema support. If you are preparing for or recovering from lipedema reduction surgery, please visit our Post-Surgical Lymphatic & Fibrosis Care page.

What Is Lipedema?

Lipedema is a chronic condition involving the connective tissue and an abnormal distribution of fat beneath the skin. It most commonly affects the hips, buttocks, legs, and sometimes the arms, often in a symmetrical pattern. The feet and hands are typically less affected.

Symptoms vary but may include:

  • Heaviness or aching in the affected areas

  • Tenderness or sensitivity to pressure

  • Easy bruising

  • Swelling or fluid accumulation

  • A nodular or uneven texture beneath the skin

  • Disproportion between the upper and lower body

Lipedema is not simply weight gain, and it is different from lymphedema—although the conditions can sometimes occur together. A formal diagnosis should be made by a qualified medical provider. Healwell Lymphatics & Massage does not diagnose lipedema.

How MLD May Support Lipedema Symptoms

Manual Lymphatic Drainage does not remove lipedema fat or stop the underlying condition from progressing. Its role is to provide gentle support for lymphatic fluid movement, comfort, and relaxation.

Depending on your symptoms and whether fluid accumulation is present, MLD may help with:

  • Feelings of heaviness or tightness

  • Temporary puffiness or swelling

  • Tenderness and sensitivity to pressure

  • Comfort in areas affected by fluid accumulation

  • Relaxation and stress reduction

  • Greater awareness of tissue and symptom changes

The light pressure used in MLD can be especially appropriate for clients whose tissues are painful or sensitive to traditional massage. Responses vary, and any relief may be temporary. MLD is best viewed as one supportive part of an individualized lipedema-management plan.

What Lipedema MLD Sessions Include

Your first appointment begins with a conversation about your health history, lipedema symptoms, areas of tenderness or swelling, current medical care, and goals for treatment.

Sessions may include:

  • Gentle, Vodder-based Manual Lymphatic Drainage

  • Treatment adapted to painful or pressure-sensitive tissue

  • Comfortable positioning based on your mobility and symptoms

  • Simple self-MLD techniques for use between appointments

  • Discussion of changes or concerns that should be shared with your healthcare provider

MLD uses light, rhythmic movements and does not require deep or painful pressure. Your comfort and tissue sensitivity guide each session.

Understanding the Scope of Care

Julianne Bowman is a Certified Manual Lymphatic Drainage practitioner (MLD-C) trained in the Vodder technique. She is not a Certified Lymphedema Therapist and does not provide Complete Decongestive Therapy.

Healwell Lymphatics & Massage does not:

  • Diagnose lipedema or lymphedema

  • Prescribe or fit medical compression garments

  • Provide comprehensive lymphedema management

  • Replace care from your physician or other qualified medical providers

Clients with suspected lymphedema, significant or unexplained swelling, skin changes, or complex compression needs should be evaluated by a physician or Certified Lymphedema Therapist. MLD at Healwell Lymphatics & Massage can be one supportive part of a broader care plan when appropriate.

Preparing for or Recovering From Lipedema Reduction Surgery

Lipedema reduction surgery involves specialized liposuction and requires a different treatment plan from conservative, non-surgical lipedema MLD.

Following surgery, treatment is provided through our Post-Surgical Lymphatic & Fibrosis Care service. With your surgeon’s approval, early sessions may center on gentle Manual Lymphatic Drainage. As tissues heal, care may gradually progress to address firmness, restriction, fibrosis, and scar tissue when appropriate.

Your surgeon’s post-operative instructions always take priority. Treatment is adapted to the areas treated, stage of healing, tissue sensitivity, and any restrictions provided by your surgical team.

If your surgery is already scheduled, we recommend reserving your initial post-operative appointments in advance so care is available when your surgeon clears you to begin.
