Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) in Portland, Oregon
Gentle support for lymphatic health, comfort, and well-being.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a specialized hands-on technique that uses light, rhythmic movements to support the movement of lymphatic fluid. The pressure is gentle, the pace is calming, and the technique is very different from traditional massage.
At Healwell Lymphatics & Massage, Julianne Bowman is a Certified Manual Lymphatic Drainage practitioner (MLD-C). Every session is adapted to your health history, symptoms, comfort, and goals.
Outside of surgical recovery, clients may choose MLD for conservative lipedema management, temporary puffiness after air travel, feelings of facial or sinus pressure, gentle head and neck work during migraine-prone periods, relaxation, and general lymphatic wellness.
Clients seeking MLD following plastic surgery should visit our Post-Surgical Lymphatic & Fibrosis Care page for information specific to surgical recovery.
What Is the Lymphatic System?
The lymphatic system is a network of vessels, lymph nodes, and organs that helps maintain fluid balance and supports immune function. It collects excess fluid, proteins, and cellular material from the tissues and returns filtered fluid to the bloodstream.
Unlike the cardiovascular system, the lymphatic system does not have one central pump like the heart. Lymph moves through a combination of natural contractions within the lymphatic vessels, breathing, muscle activity, and body movement.
When the amount of fluid in the tissues exceeds what the lymphatic system can efficiently transport, puffiness, swelling, tightness, or feelings of heaviness may occur. New, unexplained, one-sided, or persistent swelling should be medically evaluated before scheduling MLD.
Reasons Clients Choose MLD
Clients may choose Manual Lymphatic Drainage for:
Conservative lipedema support
Temporary puffiness or feelings of heaviness after air travel
Facial puffiness or feelings of sinus pressure
Gentle head, face, and neck work during migraine-prone periods
Relaxation and stress reduction
General lymphatic wellness
MLD is not a substitute for medical diagnosis or treatment. Migraines, suspected sinus infections, unexplained fluid retention, persistent swelling, or sudden changes in swelling should be evaluated by an appropriate healthcare provider.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage for Lipedema
Lipedema is a chronic connective-tissue and adipose-tissue disorder that most commonly affects the legs, hips, buttocks, and arms. Symptoms may include tenderness, heaviness, easy bruising, swelling, and sensitivity to pressure.
MLD does not remove lipedema tissue or cure the condition. However, some clients find that gentle lymphatic care helps ease feelings of heaviness, tightness, puffiness, and discomfort—particularly when fluid accumulation is also present.
Sessions at Healwell Lymphatics & Massage focus on gentle, manual lymphatic drainage techniques adapted to your symptoms, tissue sensitivity, health history, and comfort. Simple self-MLD techniques may also be provided for use between appointments.
Clients preparing for or recovering from lipedema reduction surgery should schedule through our Post-Surgical Lymphatic & Fibrosis Care service.
What You May Notice After MLD
Individual responses vary, but clients commonly describe:
A feeling of deep relaxation
Less heaviness or tightness
A temporary reduction in feelings of puffiness
Greater comfort in areas affected by fluid accumulation
A calmer, more settled feeling after treatment
MLD is gentle supportive care. It does not “detox” the body, cure a medical condition, or guarantee reduced swelling. The response depends on the cause of your symptoms, your health history, and how your body responds to treatment.
What to Expect During an MLD Session
Your first appointment begins with a conversation about your health history, current symptoms, medications, and goals. This helps determine whether MLD is appropriate and how the session should be adapted for you.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage uses light, rhythmic skin-stretching movements that follow specific lymphatic pathways. Treatment may begin at the neck, abdomen, or areas closer to the center of the body before moving toward the area where you are experiencing puffiness or heaviness.
MLD does not use deep pressure. It is generally performed without heavy oils or lotions so the skin can be moved gently and precisely. Appropriate draping and privacy are maintained throughout the session.
Most clients find MLD deeply calming, and some fall asleep during treatment. Your response may vary, and we will discuss what you notice and whether continued sessions appear appropriate.
