Post-Surgical Lymphatic & Fibrosis Care in Portland, Oregon

Specialized care from early recovery through later-stage fibrosis and scar tissue treatment.

Recovery needs change as tissues heal. At Healwell Lymphatics & Massage, treatment begins with an assessment of your procedure, healing timeline, symptoms, and surgeon’s post-operative instructions.

During early recovery, sessions may center on gentle Manual Lymphatic Drainage to support fluid movement, swelling management, and comfort. As healing progresses, care may gradually incorporate firmer post-surgical techniques, fibrosis treatment, gentle negative-pressure techniques, kinesiology taping, and scarwork when appropriate.

Every session is adapted to your stage of healing. We do not open incisions, express fluid through surgical wounds, or use aggressive techniques on newly healing tissue.

Why Stage-Appropriate Aftercare Matters

Swelling, bruising, tenderness, tightness, and changes in tissue texture are common during plastic surgery recovery. However, the techniques that may be appropriate several weeks after surgery are not necessarily appropriate during the earliest days of healing.

Early care is typically gentle and may consist primarily of Manual Lymphatic Drainage. As incisions close and tissues become more stable, treatment can gradually evolve to address firmness, restriction, developing fibrosis, and mature scar tissue.

This progressive approach allows care to respond to what your tissues need at each stage rather than applying the same routine at every appointment. Your surgeon’s instructions and medical follow-up always take priority.

What Is Post-Surgical Fibrosis?

Fibrosis is the development of dense or restricted connective tissue during the healing process. It can occur after liposuction, body contouring, abdominoplasty, and other procedures that create significant tissue disruption.

Fibrotic areas may feel firm, lumpy, rope-like, adhered, or less mobile than the surrounding tissue. They may also contribute to tightness, tenderness, or uneven texture.

Not every firm or swollen area is fibrosis. Normal post-operative swelling, a seroma, hematoma, infection, or another complication can sometimes create similar symptoms. New or worsening lumps, fluid-filled areas, redness, warmth, drainage, fever, sudden swelling, or increasing pain should be evaluated by your surgeon before massage continues.

Once healing permits, targeted fibrosis treatment and tissue mobilization may help improve tissue mobility, restriction, and texture over time. Results vary according to the procedure, severity of the fibrosis, healing timeline, and individual tissue response.

How Treatment Evolves as You Heal

Post-surgical treatment is not a single technique or fixed routine. The methods used during your session will change as your tissues recover.

Early recovery

  • Gentle, Vodder-based Manual Lymphatic Drainage

  • Treatment adapted around incisions, dressings, and surgical drains

  • Comfortable positioning based on your procedure and surgeon’s restrictions

  • Simple self-MLD education for use between appointments

As healing progresses

  • Progressively firmer post-surgical techniques, when appropriate

  • Gentle negative-pressure techniques

  • Kinesiology taping when appropriate

  • Targeted work for developing firmness and tissue restriction

Later-stage tissue recovery

  • Fibrosis treatment

  • Gentle scarwork and scar mobilization

  • Tissue mobilization for areas of restriction or adhesion

Techniques are introduced only when appropriate for your healing stage, tissue condition, sensation, and surgeon’s instructions. Treatment should not involve forceful work on newly healing tissue.

Goals of Post-Surgical Treatment

Depending on your procedure and stage of recovery, treatment may support:

  • Swelling management and lymphatic fluid movement

  • Greater comfort and reduced feelings of tightness or heaviness

  • Improved tissue mobility and flexibility

  • Gradual softening of firm or restricted areas

  • Improved mobility of mature scar tissue

  • Greater awareness of your healing timeline and tissue changes

  • Safe participation in your recovery between appointments

Individual responses vary. Treatment cannot guarantee a particular cosmetic result or replace follow-up care with your surgeon.

Plan Your Post-Surgical Care

If your surgery is already scheduled, we recommend reserving your initial appointments before your procedure. Post-operative sessions may begin as early as 48 hours after surgery when approved by your surgeon, although timing varies by procedure and surgical protocol.

Healwell Lymphatics & Massage can work around surgical drains when they remain in place, provided your surgeon has cleared you for treatment.

If you are unsure when to begin, which appointment to schedule, or whether our approach is appropriate for your procedure, request a complimentary consultation before booking.
