Healwell Portland is proud to accept insurance, making expert manual therapy more accessible to the clients who need it most.
What Insurance Does — and Doesn't — Cover
It's important to understand that health insurance does not cover post-surgical cosmetic or plastic surgery massage. Insurance providers will only approve massage therapy when it is deemed medically necessary — meaning it must be treating a specific qualifying condition.
Conditions that may qualify for coverage include:
Chronic neck or back pain
Muscle injuries
Post-surgical recovery from a medically necessary procedure
Fibromyalgia
Sports injuries
Whiplash from accidents
If you're coming to Healwell Portland for post-surgical plastic surgery or cosmetic recovery, those sessions will be self-pay. However, if you have a separate qualifying condition, your massage care for that condition may be eligible for coverage — and we're happy to help you figure out what applies to your situation.

Understanding Your Coverage
Insurance can be complicated, and massage therapy benefits vary widely from plan to plan. Here's what to expect:
A physician prescription is required. While some insurance companies don't mandate one, we require a prescription from your doctor before your first visit. This protects you from being held personally liable for the cost of your sessions and ensures the smoothest path to reimbursement. If you arrive without a prescription on file, payment will be due at the time of service.
You may pay upfront and be reimbursed. Depending on your plan, we may need to collect payment at the time of your session and submit your claim for reimbursement afterward. We'll walk you through what to expect before your appointment.
We'll help you navigate the process. If you're unsure what your plan covers, we can check some plans online on your behalf. Insurance is rarely straightforward — we're here to make it as painless as possible.
Flex Spending & Health Savings Accounts (FSA/HSA)
If you're using an FSA or HSA to pay for your sessions, a physician prescription may be required, and some accounts need an itemized receipt for reimbursement. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll make sure you have the documentation you need.
