Everything you need to know before your first visit.

Manual lymphatic drainage is a specialized, gentle form of massage that stimulates the lymphatic system to move excess fluid, reduce swelling, and support the body's natural healing process. At Healwell, I use the Vodder technique — the gold standard in MLD — which uses precise, rhythmic movements calibrated to the delicate pressure required to activate lymphatic flow. It is very different from traditional massage and requires specific certification to perform correctly.
-
No. MLD uses extremely light, precise pressure and specific movement patterns designed to target the lymphatic vessels just beneath the skin. It is a medical-grade therapy, not a relaxation treatment — though many clients find it deeply calming.
-
I am a certified MLD practitioner (MLD-C) trained in the Vodder technique, which is the internationally recognized standard for lymphatic drainage therapy. Every session begins with a full assessment and is customized to your procedure, your timeline, and your body's specific needs. MLD at Healwell may also incorporate decompression cupping or fibrosis massage when appropriate — all within the same session.
-
This depends on your procedure and your surgeon's clearance. Many clients begin MLD as early as one to two weeks post-op, once incisions are sufficiently healed. Starting early — when swelling and fluid retention are at their peak — tends to produce the best results. I always recommend checking with your surgeon before your first session, and I'm happy to coordinate with your surgical team if needed.
-
This varies significantly depending on your procedure, how your body is healing, and your goals. Clients recovering from a single procedure often benefit from four to six sessions. Those recovering from multiple procedures or experiencing significant fibrosis may benefit from more. I'll give you an honest assessment at your first visit and adjust your plan as your recovery progresses.
-
For post-surgical sessions, yes — I ask that you have your surgeon's approval before we begin treatment. This protects your healing and ensures we are working in alignment with your surgical team's plan. If you're unsure, I'm happy to help you know what questions to ask your surgeon.
-
Yes. Fibrosis — the formation of dense, sometimes lumpy scar tissue — is one of the most common post-surgical concerns I work with. A combination of MLD, targeted fibrosis massage, and decompression cupping can significantly improve tissue texture and softness over time. Early intervention produces the best results, but it is never too late to address fibrosis.
-
I regularly work with clients recovering from liposuction, tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), breast augmentation, breast reduction, explant surgery, body contouring, and facial plastic surgery procedures. If you've had a procedure not listed here, please reach out — I'm happy to discuss whether Healwell is a good fit for your recovery.
-
Wear or bring loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to your treatment area. For post-surgical clients, compression garments can be removed during the session and replaced afterward. I'll walk you through everything at your first visit.
-
Every new client begins with a thorough assessment — we'll review your surgical history, current symptoms, compression garment use, and recovery timeline before any hands-on treatment begins. This ensures your session is appropriately tailored from the very first visit.
-
I am happy to communicate with your surgeon or medical team when appropriate and with your consent. I also welcome referrals from surgical practices seeking a trusted post-surgical care partner for their patients.
-
For post-surgical and medical massage services, I do not bill insurance directly, though some clients are able to use HSA or FSA funds. I recommend checking with your plan administrator.
